Puppy-proofing the house (and surviving a chew-proof writing desk) 🐾📚

Dear Reader,

If you’ve ever tried to write a scene while a tiny four-legged storm of energy zooms across the living room, you know the ultimate test of authorial focus!

Lately, life around the writing desk has gotten a lot fluffier—and considerably more chaotic. Bringing a puppy into the home is pure joy, but it also turns your cozy workspace into a high-stakes obstacle course. Between dangling charging cables, floor-level notebook stacks, and wooden chair legs, everything looks like a gourmet chew toy to a curious pup!

Here are a few essential lessons I've learned about puppy-proofing the workspace while keeping the words flowing:

  • Elevate the Inspiration: Manuscripts, outline pads, and favorite pens must move at least three feet above floor level. (RIP to the draft outline that almost became an afternoon snack!)
  • Cable Management Is Key: Loose cords are both a hazard and a distraction. Tucking charger wires into protective sleeves keeps everyone safe and sound.
  • The "Chew Toy Swap" Strategy: Whenever sharp puppy teeth reach for a desk leg or slipper, immediately replace it with a favorite squeaky toy or chew bone.
  • Embracing the Micro-Breaks: Writing in shorter, focused sprints between play sessions and naps has surprisingly boosted my productivity!

To all the fellow pet parents out there: What’s the most creative (or chaotic!) way your pet has ever "helped" you work or read? Hit reply and let me know—I'd love to hear your favorite stories!
